Fortescue’s Season Ends as Rangers Decision Looms

Drew Fortescue (Boston College)

Only four New York Rangers prospects played Friday as the regular season winds down. For one, it may have been the end of his college career.

Was This Fortescue’s Finale at Boston College?

Drew Fortescue recorded a secondary assist, but No. 17 Boston College saw its season end with a 4-3 overtime loss to No. 14 UConn in the Hockey East semifinals.

Fortescue set up the Eagles’ third-period tying goal at 14:13. The even‑strength marker forced overtime, but UConn ended the game at 1:18 of the extra period.

Boston College sits 18th in the NCAA Pairwise rankings and will not earn an at‑large bid. Only six conference champions and the next ten teams qualify for the NCAA tournament.

The loss likely closes Fortescue’s college career. The expectation is that he will sign with the Rangers and report to Hartford on an Amateur Tryout Contract.

Fortescue has little left to prove defensively at the NCAA level. His next step is unlocking more offense.

For three seasons, he anchored Boston College’s top pairing. At 6-foot‑2 and 198 pounds, the left‑shot defender projects as a steady second‑pair pro.

He posted 4-10-14 in 36 games this season. The numbers are modest, but his role was defense-first.

Across 112 games at Boston College, Fortescue totaled 8-25-33. Those totals undersell his impact, as he often played with partners who struggled defensively.

His pro game should open up. He owns a heavy point shot but rarely hunts offense. That should change in Hartford, where the Rangers need defensemen and can offer heavy minutes.

His Future Decided, Boilard Is College Bound

Last week, Raoul Boilard’s future was unclear. This week, he announced his commitment to Lake Superior State of the CCHA.

Boilard scored his 15th goal as Cape Breton beat Saint John 4-2 in QMJHL play. The win secured the sixth seed in the Western Conference.

Late in the first period, Boilard took a pass from Aiden McCullough along the boards. He cut inside and fired a screened shot that beat the goalie clean.

Boilard improved to 15-21-36 on the season and went 10-for-16 on faceoffs. Cape Breton will face the Newfoundland Regiment in the first round.

Greentree, Spitfires Fall in Shootout

Liam Greentree and the Windsor Spitfires missed a chance to clinch the OHL West Division. They dropped a 3-2 shootout loss to the London Knights.

Greentree was held scoreless but led all skaters with eight shots. He missed on his shootout attempt.

Windsor can clinch the division with a Flint loss Saturday or by earning one point Sunday against the Soo Greyhounds.

Gonchar, Wolves Earn Shootout Win

Artem Gonchar was scoreless as Sudbury beat Brampton 3-2 in a shootout. He recorded two shots.

Sudbury already knows its playoff opponent. The Wolves will face Brantford, which will finish with the OHL’s best record. The Bulldogs will enter the series at least 50 points ahead in the standings.
