Rangers Prospects Battle for OHL West Title as Gonchar Hits 50 Points

Liam Greentree (Windsor Spitfires)

It is the final week of the Canadian junior season and the NCAA conference finals. It is a busy time for New York Rangers prospects.

Four Rangers prospects played on St. Patrick’s Day in the OHL. The Western Conference and West Division races remained tight.

Flint vs. Windsor for the West Title

Flint and Windsor are fighting for the West Division title. Flint’s Jacob Battaglia and Nathan Aspinall are chasing Liam Greentree’s Windsor Spitfires.

Flint fell out of the Western Conference race on Tuesday. The Firebirds lost 6–2 to Kitchener. The loss gave Kitchener the Western Conference regular‑season title.

Battaglia and Aspinall were held without points. The loss hurt Flint even more when Windsor beat Erie 5–1. That win moved Windsor back into first place in the West Division.

Greentree did not score but led the game with seven shots. Windsor has two games left. They visit London on Friday and the Soo Greyhounds on Sunday.

Flint plays Wednesday at Owen Sound. They finish at home Saturday against London. Windsor leads Flint by one point.

Gonchar Reaches 50 Points

Artem Gonchar (Sudbury Wolves)

Sudbury defenseman Artem Gonchar and the Wolves already know they will face Brantford in the first round. Sudbury lost 6–3 to Brampton on Tuesday.

The Wolves gave up five straight goals before scoring three late goals. The final score looked closer than the game felt.

Gonchar scored his 15th goal of the season. He reached 50 points with a 15‑35‑50 line.

Gonchar remains a major threat from the point. His shot is a real weapon. But his minus‑22 rating shows he still needs defensive growth.

2026 OHL Coaches Poll Reaction

Nathan Aspinall (Flint Firebirds)

The 2026 OHL Coaches Poll dropped this week, and it raised some eyebrows. It also raised some blood pressure.

Flint captain Nathan Aspinall jumped from 47 points to 90 points this season. He did not finish in the top three for “Most Improved Player.” That makes no sense.

Aspinall also missed the top three for “Smartest Player.” Yet he finished third for “Best Playmaker.” The logic does not add up.

Aspinall should be a Red Tilson Award finalist. The media votes on that award. His numbers speak for themselves.

Windsor’s Liam Greentree was also overlooked. He did not place in the “Most Dangerous Player” category. His 36 goals say otherwise.

Barrie defenseman Evan Passmore at least received some respect. He finished second for “Best Shot Blocker” in the Eastern Conference. But he did not place for “Best Defensive Defenseman.”

It feels like Rangers prospects get ignored in every coaches poll. No love. No respect.

BOOOOOOOOO.
